Chairman Wontumi Could Leave Prison After 13 Years If He Qualifies for Maximum Remission – Ghana Prisons Explains

The Ghana Prisons Service has clarified that Chairman Wontumi may not necessarily serve the entire 20-year prison sentence imposed on him if he qualifies for the maximum remission permitted under Ghanaian law.

Ghana Prisons Service explains how prison remission could reduce Chairman Wontumi’s sentence.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Prisons Service, inmates who maintain good behaviour and comply with prison rules and regulations can earn up to one-third remission of their sentences where applicable.

If Chairman Wontumi qualifies for the full remission, his 20-year prison term could be reduced to approximately 13 years and four months.

The clarification follows widespread public discussions after the high-profile conviction in the Samreboi illegal mining case. While the prison authorities explained how the remission system works, they stressed that eligibility depends on an inmate’s conduct and compliance with prison regulations throughout the sentence.

Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi’s legal team has indicated that it intends to challenge the conviction and sentence through the appropriate legal processes.

The case continues to attract national attention, with many Ghanaians closely monitoring developments surrounding the appeal process and the implementation of Ghana’s prison regulations.
