Zimbabwe is witnessing a powerful wave of social-media activism in 2016 as citizens use the national flag to express frustration over the country’s economic difficulties, corruption and governance.
The movement, known as #ThisFlag, begins in May when pastor Evan Mawarire posts a video on social media while draped in the Zimbabwean flag. He speaks about his concerns for the country and calls on citizens to confront the challenges facing Zimbabwe. The video quickly goes viral, turning the hashtag into a wider national movement.
The campaign grows beyond social media as supporters participate in demonstrations and nationwide stay-away actions. Businesses, schools and government offices close during some of the protests, bringing international attention to Zimbabwe’s growing political and economic tensions.
Mawarire is arrested and charged over his activism before being released by a court, while the government faces increasing criticism from protesters and other groups.
The movement also becomes part of a broader period of unrest, with Zimbabweans protesting cash shortages, delayed salaries, unemployment and proposed bond notes.
By mid-2016, #ThisFlag is placing Zimbabwe’s domestic frustrations before a global audience, demonstrating the growing power of social media as a tool for civic mobilisation across Africa.
