Osafo-Maafo made the remarks while speaking to Adom News in Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region, where he discussed the NDC government’s performance and the prospects for the next general election.

According to Osafo-Maafo, Ghanaians will judge the government based on its ability to fulfil the promises it made to voters. He said that if the NDC fails to meet those expectations, the party could be rejected at the polls.

He used the phrase “uprooted like mushrooms” to describe what he said could happen to the NDC in 2028 if the government disappoints the electorate.

The comments come as Ghana’s two major political parties prepare for the 2028 general election. The NPP is currently reorganising its structures, while the NDC, which won the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, is governing the country.

Osafo-Maafo previously served as Senior Minister and later Senior Presidential Advisor under the Akufo-Addo administration. He was also Member of Parliament for Akim Oda and served as Finance Minister during the Kufuor administration.

His comments represent the position of a senior NPP figure and form part of the political debate over the performance of the current administration and the parties’ preparations for the 2028 election.
