Yaw Ampofo Ankrah Sacked as Director-General of National Sports Authority

The report, shared by Joy 99.7 FM, states that Ankrah has been removed from his position at the state sports agency. The development comes after months of scrutiny surrounding the administration of the NSA and Ghana’s wider sports management system.

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah’s tenure at the NSA

Ankrah was appointed Director-General of the National Sports Authority in March 2025 after previously serving as President of the Ghana Beach Soccer Association. His appointment placed him at the centre of the country’s sports administration, with responsibilities covering the development and coordination of sporting activities and national sports infrastructure.

During his tenure, Ankrah was involved in initiatives including grassroots sports development, the NSA Talent Bank and preparations for major international sporting events. He also represented the Authority in engagements involving Ghana’s national teams and sports federations.

Recent issues surrounding the NSA

The reported dismissal follows a period of increased attention on the NSA. In September 2026, the Minority in Parliament called for Ankrah’s suspension or dismissal over allegations connected to visa facilitation arrangements for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The NSA denied the allegations and said its legal team was cooperating with a police investigation.

The NSA governing board was also dissolved by President John Dramani Mahama in September 2026 and was expected to be reconstituted.

What happens next?

The next steps for the National Sports Authority, including who will take over the Director-General position, will be closely watched by stakeholders across Ghana’s sporting sector.

The reported change comes at a significant period for Ghanaian sports, with the country preparing for a number of international sporting commitments and continuing discussions over the management and development of national sports infrastructure.
