Ghana’s “Onaapo” Song Goes Viral After Election

A Ghanaian campaign song is becoming a nationwide music phenomenon in early 2017 as “Onaapo” continues gaining popularity weeks after the 2016 general election.

The song, produced by Ghanaian musician and producer Nacee for the National Democratic Congress campaign, becomes widely associated with the election. After the NDC loses the election, the song takes on a new life when supporters of the victorious New Patriotic Party adopt and adapt it during celebrations.

“Onaapo” becomes a popular chant at parties, public gatherings, weddings and other social events. Its title also spreads across social media, where Ghanaians use the word as a hashtag and slogan beyond its original political context.

The song’s popularity crosses political boundaries as different groups embrace its catchy rhythm. Nacee later explains that he creates the fast-paced “jama” version to give the campaign album a danceable track and involves emerging performer Dee Aja.

By January 2017, the song is attracting substantial online attention and is being discussed as a potential contender for major Ghanaian music awards.
