Ghana’s tallest man, Sulemana Abdul Samed, affectionately known as Awuche, has died at the age of 33 following a prolonged battle with health complications linked to gigantism and acromegaly.
According to reports, Awuche passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. He had earlier been transferred from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu for specialized care after his condition worsened.
The late Awuche had been suffering from several life-threatening health complications, including a severely curved spine, heart-related problems, and a serious infection in his left leg. Doctors had reportedly recommended amputating the infected leg in an effort to save his life.
Just weeks before his death, renowned Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama stepped in to fully sponsor his medical treatment. The intervention aimed to provide advanced medical care and explore treatment options that could improve his health and save his leg.
Standing at an extraordinary 7 feet 8 inches (234 cm), Awuche became one of Ghana’s most recognizable personalities. His remarkable height attracted both local and international attention, particularly after a widely viewed BBC News feature highlighted the challenges healthcare workers faced in accurately measuring his height because suitable equipment was unavailable.
Awuche was diagnosed with acromegaly, a rare hormonal disorder caused by excessive production of growth hormone, resulting in continued body growth well into adulthood. Despite the severe physical challenges associated with the condition, he remained admired for his humility, resilience, and positive outlook on life.
Following news of his passing, social media has been flooded with tributes from Ghanaians mourning his loss. Many have remembered him as a gentle, kind-hearted individual whose inspiring story united people across the country in compassion and support.
His family is yet to announce funeral and burial arrangements.
